IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PLAN

Person responsible for implementing the plan.
Beth Johnston / Kim Johnston (media)

Position of this person:
Principal

School personnel and volunteers will be involved in the following ways.
Our teachers and volunteers have been trained in the Reading For All Learners program and the Accelerated Reading program. They are involved daily with students in reading activities. Our plan will allow us to provide leveled reading books for our emergent readers. Advanced books are needed for our gifted students in each grade level. We have an additional need for books written in Spanish, bilingual books, and books from the many cultures that are represented at our school.

ACCOUNTABILITY

There is an accountability program developed for the school strategic plan.
Yes

Relationship of this plan to the school strategic plan.
Literacy for all our students is our highest priority. It not only affects student learning but self esteem as well. Our Strategic Plan specifically calls for 100 new trade books to be added to our library. It is our mission to facilitate learning and this acquisition will be a great support to educate all students as they prepare for a productive life in a changing world.

Accountability measures to be used.
 Stanford Achievement Test (SAT/9e)
 End-of-Level or End-of-Course Tests
 Performance Assessment
 Other Assessment or measurements

Goals for student improvement.
Recent research shows that one of the first ways to increase literacy skills is to improve school libraries. Our goal is to create a world class library. We feel that by doing this student improvement will occur and our test scores will increase.

Student improvement will be measured as described below.
We will measure student improvement in reading and the language arts by looking at our previously mentioned test scores, student grades, portfolios, and teacher observations.

Reading

3. Narrative report

Combining our Trust Land funds with donations, district media funds, and textbook funding we have increased the number of books available in our library by over 400 books. We have also purchased 350 Accelerated Reader quizzes and 230 voice upgrades. 450 students in grades Kindergarten through 6th have benefitted. We saw a need for voice activated A.R. tests for the first grade students and we have just obtained a number of these and the books that go with them. The STAR test was used to place every student at the beginning of the year and we have continued to show good progress using this test and additionally the QR I in the lower grades. We were interested and pleased to see how accurate the STAR testing was when compared to the QR I.. We administer the End of Level or CRT tests in May and will be interested to see the growth and comparison from 2001. Teachers have provided reports showing more than a years growth for most students. Our library is becoming a hive of activity year round, being used during the summer in connection with services offered in summer school. We also have a Before and After School program and the library and the Accelerated Reader Program have been used during these times as well. Sunset Elementary would not have been able to participate in the Accelerated Reader program, or conduct our school wide reading program as effectively with out these funds.
