  • Your progress during this school year
  • Your measurements of student improvement
  • What this program allowed the school to do for students that would not have happened without the funds
During the 2003 - 2004 school year we have made significant progress in
our school wide goals to improve reading and writing. We purchased a new
reading program, Read 180, for our regular and resource students.
Students were identified during the summer for placement into the classes.

These students were either resource students with a reading qualification
shown in their individualized testing or they were students falling
significantly below our school percentile in SAT reading scores; 20 and
below as compared to 69 for the school average percentile.
Students in resource were served in a separate reading class with a
resource teacher providing the addtional support for these students and
the others were placed in one of three semester classes scheduled each
semester. We immediately found the SAT scores were not as accurate as we
desired and we then tested all sophomore students using the diagnostic
assessment which was a part of the READ 180 program. Our second semester
students were placed based on the second assessment. Students and parents
report great success and are very supportive of the program. Our final
assessment of the students served in the program during this year will
give
us an indicator of measured growth. The cost of the READ 180 program was
far more than we would have been able to afford without the use of the
Land
Trust money. In addition to the READ 180, we have further supported our
desire to improve writing across the curriculum with a continuation of the
Writers INC resource text for all courses and also encouraging literacy
through the support of additional books and volumes for our media center.
SAT and CRT scores in the fall will provide us with the evaluation
instrument to indicate success.
