Plans Councils Prepare
One primary responsibility of School Community Councils outlined in the law is to review and make a recommendation to the local school board on the five school plans listed below. All regular public schools are expected to review the plans annually. The Council may approve a multi-year plan, make small or significant changes to existing plans or they may feel that some plans need to be re-created. Councils may appoint task forces or sub-committees to do the detailed review of each plan as it relates to data about the students’ progress. The sub-committee then makes a presentation to the council describing their recommendations. The Council then considers the recommendations for approval. The council is encouraged to engage experts available at the school to participate on sub-committees. For example, the expertise of reading specialists serving the school is an important resource to a subcommittee preparing the Reading Achievement Plan. The vote of the council to approve a plan becomes the school recommendation to the local school board for final approval.
