School Community Councils

School community councils are required for all regular public schools.  Effective school community councils consist of parents and professionals working together to address the needs of students.  Some of the council's activities are required by rule and law, but most are simply an expression of community-spirited individuals trying to do what they know must be done to help students succeed.

This page includes tools to help councils be successful.  Some have been developed in working group teams, some by schools and districts and some are provided to clarify laws, rules and compliance requirements.  New to this page is a section of documents translated into Spanish.  Please see below Información en Español.

The dates when local school boards most recently approved each plan for your school can be found on this website from the home page by choosing a school, logging in and selecting the tab at the top of the page "Plan Approval Dates."

This section provides a basic guide and materials to assist councils in working together towards school improvement. Included here are the expectations of those involved with councils. The School Improvement Plan (SIP) is the overarching framework for school change. Other plans and actions support this plan. This plan may be included in the SIP or be a separate plan that suppports the SIP. The School LAND Trust Plan and associated funding support a component of the SIP. Reading Achievement Plans are required for elementary schools. The plan may be a component of the SIP. The plan must support the District Reading Achievement Plan. Districts receive matching money from the legislature to implement reading plans. The Child Access Routing Plan is required for elementary, middle and junior high schools. This section includes a guide for districts, training for school board members and some district policies on school community councils.

The materials provided here are intended to assist school community councils in the important work they are charged with.  Additional materials will be added as they are developed and as experts are willing to share their tools for school collaboration and improvement.  Please contact Paula Plant paula.plant@schools.utah.gov or 801-538-7555 for suggestions, concerns or materials you would like to see added.
